Koei’s long-running Romance of the Three Kingdoms grand-strategy saga – based on the 14th century historical texts by Luo Guanzhong around the decline of the Han Dynasty – has reached the PC in its eleventh iteration. 4X.Scope has always had a fond affection for the grandiose nature of the games, but more importantly, for the way the franchise weaves a sense of the characters and the impact their personal and diplomatic relationships with their counterparts had in the famously epic saga that spanned from 169AD to 280AD. So, in the spirit of a grand-strategist – who has expertly documented just how deep a Paradox game, Hearts of Iron 2: Doomsday – Armageddon, can be – an occasional series into capturing the essence and mechanics of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, a quite different but nonetheless daunting grand-strategic gem, shall take place.
